the Mom Gig
Who am I?
When I’m home in Bloomington, Indiana, I’m wife to hornist Jeff Nelsen, mama to Rhys (7) and Blair (2), and caretaker to many. I also dabble a bit in portrait photography and fitness. But really, I am keeper of the Nelsen family.
When I’m away from home, I’m an opera singer. I perform on the world’s greatest stages. I sing with divas from around the globe. My “mom-life” yoga pants, tunics and sweaters are exchanged for gowns and jewels.
I love to be creative in as many ways as possible. This includes cooking, crafts, playing with the kids, hiking, going to the gym and baking.
I hope you enjoy this platform for discussing parenting, fitness, performance and traveling the world with kids.
Hailed as a “rich voiced, expressive mezzo-soprano” by San Francisco Classical Voice and “appealingly direct and honest in tone and bearing,” by Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe, Nina Yoshida Nelsen made her New York City Opera debut with great success as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, conducted by George Manahan.
In the 2017-2018 season, Nina Yoshida Nelsen returns to Seattle Opera singing the role of Mama in Jack Perla’s An American Dream. She also will make a company debut with Manitoba Opera singing Suzuki in Madama Butterfly. She will perform Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer with the Grand Junction and Flagstaff Symphony Orchestras and returns to both the Santa Barbara and Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestras to perform the alto solos in Mozart’s Requiem.
